Karibu Loo

Karibu Loo was started in 2015 as a social enterprise with two purposes, to generate revenue to support our mission in Kenya and provide employment for graduates of our program.

“Karibu” means “welcome” in Swahili, and “Loo” is well-understood in Kenya as a word for “toilet” due to Kenya’s British colonial past. Karibu Loo rents high-quality mobile toilets for events (weddings, funerals, business gatherings, and marathons) as well as to commercial or construction clients. Loos are sourced from U.S.-based Satellite Industries, and the distinct design of the Mondo model used is an attractive alternative to other mobile toilets available in Kenya.

Karibu Loo

The integrated tagline in the logo (“helping educate children”) clearly states the business’s purpose: to provide a clean, high-quality portable toilet experience while also reminding clients they are supporting a company that uses its profits to educate impoverished Kenyan children.

The business is led in Kenya by Steve Muendo, Business Manager. U.S. volunteers provide marketing and sales oversight. Nine Ngong Road Children’s Foundation program graduates are currently employed full-time in marketing (2), and operations (7).

Event rentals include “Sales and Operations Associates”, whose role is to keep the toilets clean and supplied with toilet paper, sanitizing liquid or water, and all other needed supplies throughout the event. The Associate Program has employed over 100 recent high school graduates, providing an opportunity to learn basic job skills, including the importance of showing up for work on time, being appropriately dressed, and completing assigned tasks positively and engagingly.
