Our Impact

Our mission since inception has been to support life transformation through education and, ultimately, employment. Friends of Ngong Road (FoNR) has made a significant impact on the lives of numerous children in Nairobi, helping them transition from the slums to success.

  • We have served over 675 students
  • We have over 250 alumni
  • 68% of our alumni are earning income, ahead of the Kenyan national average
  • 77% of our alumni are now self-sufficient

We continue to increase our impact

Since Friends of Ngong Road was established in 2006, over 675 young people have been significantly and positively impacted by the program. We have over 250 alumni.

Our Students are Graduating

With the comprehensive support FoNR provides, our students are performing well and graduating.

From Slums to Success – Our Graduates are Finding Employment

Living in the slums, the prospects for steady employment are low; many are getting by day to day. By getting an education, your prospects for steady employment increase dramatically. Most of our graduates have found good, steady employment and careers.

  • 68% of our alumni are earning income – 5% above the Kenyan national average
  • 46% of our graduates are employed in the formal employment sector compared to the national average of 28%

Our graduates are pursuing a wide range of careers, some becoming lawyers, engineers, chefs, digital marketers, and entrepreneurs.

Many of our graduates are becoming strong leaders. The leadership skills taught during our Life Skills training have helped our graduates succeed.

  • 39% of those earning an income are managing others
  • 62% of female alumni are managing others

Read about some of our success stories.

We are Developing Self-Reliant Alumni

77% of respondents have moved from their family home, and 73% are supporting someone else (up from 59% in 2021).

84% of women alumni are supporting others.

Our alumni are achieving self-sufficiency and helping their families move to the Kenyan middle class.
