Computer Lab

The Computer Lab first opened in the attic of the first NRCF office building. It was a tight and very hot space with barely enough room for instructors to walk between chairs looking over the shoulders of students lined up along its walls to provide instruction.

When NRCF expanded its initial office  across the street, the Computer Lab was relocated to the new building, occupying a larger space. Thanks to a generous donation, the walls were lined with desktop computers. The challenge was, it was at the office’s front door. Anyone entering or exiting the only door available had to walk through the middle of the Computer Lab. Distractions were common, as those doing other business walked through the room talking and attending to their business. Classroom instruction was routinely interrupted.

Thankfully, children growing up in the slums tend to have a highly developed sense of focus. They live in rooms divided by sheets, with many family members living together. But the distractions do make for less than optimal learning environments.

The new Computer Lab will have a space dedicated to use as a Computer Lab. It will accommodate more computers, and a classroom table configuration more conducive to teaching and learning. Elimu Hub’s solar powered electrical source will ensure more reliable electricity, avoiding the constant challenges of rolling brownouts and power surges. This will also help protect the valuable computer equipment and create a learning environment that signals to the student that they are working with modern technology that will more adequately prepare them for the world ahead.
