Expanded Library

Since its first opening, NRCF has grown its library thanks to the generous donations and contributions from sponsors and supporters. Visitors often pack a few books in their luggage and drop them at the library. The library has grown to more than 3,000 books of all kinds, including fiction, African Literature, sciences, early readers, self-improvement, social studies, biography, Christian/religion, animals, adults, art, comic, sports, math, puzzles, poetry, history, nature, games, jokes, and magazines.

We have an extensive list of new books which we intend to purchase.

Students love reading and love the library. Books allow people, including children living in the slums of Nairobi, to expand their knowledge, perspectives and imaginations. Today, many around the globe take for granted all the access to information through the internet, e-books, and podcasts. But in the slums, access to the modern world is limited and sometimes unreliable. Printed books are treasured and needed.

By most accounts, the NCRF library is the largest one in the Dagoretti slum. And with the growing number of students, more books are needed overall. Since most students were in primary school when the library was started, many books are geared toward younger readers. We now need books for older students.

Finally, establishing a dedicated space will provide a quiet and well-lit place for reading and study. In the old offices, the library also served as a conference room, a meeting room, and a storage room. The new expanded library will not be competing for other uses and will become a welcoming destination for thoughtful learning.
