34 Students Complete KCPE Exam

Each year, students finishing 8th grade take the Kenya Comprehensive Primary Exam (KCPE) the results of which determine the caliber of high school they will attend.  Prioritizing success, we dedicate resources to maximize KCPE performance, recognizing its significance in shaping students’ future prospects.

For instance, the initiative motivates 8th graders to engage in focused tutoring, enhancing their readiness for the upcoming examination.

The KCPE is a 500-point exam; the national average in 2013 was 244.

Our kids outperform

Between 2010 and 2013 we have had 151 students from our program take the KCPE.  In each year, more than 75% of our students have outperformed the national average score.  The most exciting development for our program in 2013 is that 17 students in our program scored higher than 300 and four students scored higher than 370.
 
The Kenyan education system
 
In Kenya, primary education is compulsory, that is, all government-funded schools must admit all students whether or not they can afford to pay fees or purchase a uniform and books.  These schools are chronically underfunded and of low quality.  Therefore, students in our program all attend private primary schools and our program pays the fees.  In contrast, at the secondary school level, government schools are generally both less expensive and of higher caliber than private schools. As a result, our first choice is to place our students in government-funded high schools.
 
All NRCF students who score above 200 on the KCPE will be placed in a secondary school commensurate with their KCPE scores. Those who score below 200 on the KCPE will be placed in a trade school designed to provide them job skills training in a more hands-on setting.  In 2013, two of our KCPE exam-takers fell in that category.

First NRCF grads to attend National Schools

Government-sponsored high schools include “National”, “Provincial” and “District” schools. National secondary schools are the most selective and have excellent teachers and resources.  In 2014, four students in our program achieved marks above 370 thus qualifying to attend National high schools. In addition, our staff presented our program to the head of a National school and secured three more places for our kids scoring above 350. That means we will have seven children joining a National school in 2014. The history of our program has admitted these students to National high schools for the first time
